- Test your smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Testing your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors is a simple task that you should actually be doing monthly. Your detectors should have a “test” button. If the alarm sounds, you’re good to go. If not, replace batteries immediately and test again. If it still doesn’t sound, it’s possible there’s simply corrosion on the battery terminal, and it won’t detect new batteries. Clean it and try again. If it still doesn’t work, you’ll likely need a new detector.
2. Energy Efficient LEDs
Energy efficient LEDs are a great and simple way you can reduce your energy usage for the year. They use 75% less energy than traditional incandescent buble and last 35-50x longer which will help you save on maintenance costs as well as energy costs. Another benefit is that they emit very little heat so there is a decreased risk of an electrical fire.
3. GFCIs
GFCI is a device that shuts off an electric circuit when it detects that current is following along an unintended path and they are installed by a qualified electrician. They are supposed to be tested every month which can be done easily by using the test and reset buttons. The current National Electric Code requires GFCIs to be installed in all moisture prone areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. The New Year is a great time to make sure you have GFCIs in all the required locations of your home and to test them to make sure they are working and will protect from electrocution.
4. Have a whole-house surge protector installed
These days the average household is filled with expensive electronics and an unexpected power surge can destroy any electronic device along its path and can also cause an electrical fire to occur. Installing a whole-house surge protection is a great way to protect your electronics and appliances from a power surge. These are common during storms and with spring showers and hurricane season, now is a great time to get protection.
