LOOK. LISTEN. LEARN.
Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.
Every year the National Fire Protection Association sponsors Fire Prevention Week to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire.
Did you know that home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year?
This year’s Fire Prevention Week Campaign is “Look.Listen.Learn. Be Aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” We’ve shared electrical safety tips using these three simple steps to help you reduce the likelihood of an electrical fire.
-
Look for smoke detectors on every level of the home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. Smoke detectors need to be installed in all those locations of the home and tested monthly.
-
Look for overloaded outlets. Consider having additional circuits or outlets added by a qualified electrician as needed.
-
Look to ensure that all your light bulbs match the recommended wattage on the light fixture.
-
Look at your electrical cords and extension cords for damage such as frayed cords and never run them under a rug. Only use extension cords temporarily.
-
Listen for any signs that there is an electrical problem such as unusual sizzling or buzzing sounds from your electrical system, insulation or circuit breakers. Contact a qualified electrician immediately.
-
Learn an evacuation plan that can be used in case of an emergency, and practice with your family.
-
Learn about your electrical system. Have your home electrical system thoroughly inspected by a licensed electrician to ensure that all electrical work in the home meets the safety codes in the NEC (National Electric Code).
-
Be aware of any signs that there is an electrical problem such as lights that flicker or dim and circuit breakers that trip repeatedly. Contact a qualified electrician immediately.
