What is an arc flash and why is it a workplace hazard?

An arc flash is an explosive release of energy caused by an electrical fault between energized conductors or between a conductor and ground. Arc flash incidents can produce extreme heat, intense light, pressure waves, and molten metal — posing severe burn, blast, and injury risks to anyone in the vicinity. OSHA and NFPA 70E require employers to assess arc flash hazards and implement appropriate safety measures to protect workers who interact with energized electrical equipment.

An arc flash study is a comprehensive engineering analysis of your electrical system that calculates the incident energy levels at each piece of electrical equipment. The study identifies arc flash boundaries, determines the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for each work location, and produces equipment labels showing the hazard level and required PPE. Transworld Electric’s engineers perform arc flash studies in accordance with NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584 — the leading standards for arc flash hazard analysis.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 requires employers to assess workplace hazards and provide appropriate PPE — which includes arc flash hazards. NFPA 70E provides the industry-accepted methodology for meeting this obligation. While NFPA 70E itself is a consensus standard rather than a regulation, OSHA regularly cites it as the recognized standard of care for electrical safety. Facilities with energized electrical equipment are strongly advised to have a current arc flash study on file to demonstrate compliance.

NFPA 70E recommends that arc flash studies be reviewed and updated whenever significant changes are made to the electrical system — such as adding or removing equipment, changing utility service, or modifying protective device settings. As a general best practice, studies should be reviewed at least every five years to ensure they reflect the current state of the electrical system.
