WHAT IS A TRANSFORMER TURNS RATIO METER?

A transformer turns ratio meter (TTR Meter) is used to test ratio accuracy of a transformer. A TTR Meter works by applying an AC low voltage test to the primary coils of the transformer and then reads the ratio of the secondary coils. By using Ohms law, it divides the voltage on your primary coil by the voltage of your secondary and gives calculates the ratio. There are 3 styles of TTR meters that include single-phase models, 3 phase and PT and Ct (Current Transformers) & PT (Potential Transformers) meters.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TRANSFORMER TURNS RATIO TESTING?

The benefit of performing a TTR test is that it can confirm that the transformer has the correct ratio of primary to secondary turns. If the test is used correctly, it can help identify tap changer performance, shortened turns, open winding, incorrect winding connections and other faults inside transformers. This important because it can tell you the health of your transformer and diagnose diagnose issues such as a bad coil or explain some voltage irregularities that you may be experiencing.
